instrument-a-day 6: wave scraper

February 8th, 2010

Can you take an audio waveform, laser-cut it into a piece of acrylic,
and then play it back by scraping the waveform?

(Spoiler: NO.)

Ingenious concept. I often wondered if you could do a similar thing by carving a waveform over a long distance on a road, and then hear it by driving over top of it, like a rumble strip. I think a primitive tune would be possible. That was a very amitious waveform you were using. You should keep experimenting with this!
