LEV: Machine for Playing a Theremin
more pictures!

Lev is a machine for playing a theremin.

Lev is named after Lev Termen or Leon Theremin, a Russian scientist who invented one of the first electronic musical instruments, an instrument which is played without touching, and which bears his name.

Lev is made out of an old floor lamp, some plumbing supplies, a few empty mint tins, and some microprocessors. There's a picture of Lev down below.

Lev will never replace the human theremin virtuoso, although, as there are so few of the latter, a a mechanical substitute may someday be vital to our economy.

What does Lev sound like when it plays the instrument? There will be music samples here in the future, but

Lev will be playing live at Artbots 2003, at Eyebeam Atelier in New York City, on July 12-13, 2003. Please come, see, hear!

If you would like to see more photos of Lev, or download high-resolution photos for print use, proceed to the publicity page.

Here are some early sketches of Lev and its even more outlandish cousin SOUP.

Did you see Sketching Device One at Artbots 2002?

Lev, SOUP, and Sketching Device One were made by Ranjit Bhatnagar, who can be contacted at ranjit(@)moonmilk.com. See Sensitive Research, another unnecessary work of interactive art, in the art gallery at the SIGGRAPH 2003 conference in San Diego, July 27-31, 2003. More of Ranjit's work may or may not be found at moonmilk.com and gameLab.
