Feb 22: Lucasfilm Strikes Back (java game) Jan-Feb '97: eggs get a looksmart and a gist pick, the playground gets a netguide; SmartAss awards are created; merchandising wars gets a gist pick and is gamelan cool; benbot goes to the institute, bewilders dozens, and gets a gist pick; the dog chews up my sugarcubes video; mice discover sculpture; moonmilk reads books.   It was written in AppleScript, of all things, and I gave it away when the old mac server overheated. But it was, of course, the first Insult Server on the web.

• American Heritage insists that "cul-de-sacs" is the proper plural, not "culs-de-sac," so what am I to do? Anyway, in case you didn't know, it means a dead-end street, or a fleshy bag or one-ended tube like the appendix. It comes from the French for "bottom of the sack," which is as good a description of this World Wide Whatchamacallit thing as any.

  I used to work a refuse round in the summer holidays (ie garbage collector); it was good money, especially when I found GBP 15 (about $25) at the bottom of a bin. That was a lot of money in 1978.

  Anyway, the driver of the dustcart (=US garbage truck) used to swear a lot, and that's an understatement. One particular phrase he used was "cul-de-fucking-sac". Another was "Upton-on-fucking-Severn" (a small village in Worcestershire).
