Warm summer nights, fireflies, bloodthirsty kids running around with explosives. Fireworks have been illegal for decades in the states in which I've lived. This will have to do. Don't just sit there staring: mouse it!

For full visual effects you need a full-color display (more than 256 colors). Certain versions of Netscape may make it look even worse, but go ahead and give it a try.

Geek notes:
If the program finds itself falling behind its animation goals, it reduces the number of sparks to speed things up. "Realistic" sputtering is a side-effect, as it continually but inaccurately adjusts its sparkliness to try to keep the animation rate up. This also means that faster computers will see more sparks than slow ones.
